DATA SUPPORTED BENEFITS

These statistics and insights highlight the vital role that spaces like Breaking Bread Village play in our society.

When we listen with understanding, build bridges, and create communication in our communities, wellbeing improves.

Studies show that nearly 36% of adults in the U.S. report feeling lonely on a regular basis. Community gatherings can significantly reduce feelings of isolation by fostering a sense of belonging and connection.

Research indicates that safe, inclusive spaces can lead to 30% lower stress levels and improve mental well-being by providing environments where people feel supported and valued.

Over 70% of young people say that community involvement helps them build confidence and resilience, creating a foundation for a healthier, more engaged future.

Conversations across diverse perspectives reduce polarization and create understanding. A recent survey revealed that 84% of Americans believe community discussions can help address critical social issues.

Studies by the University of Pennsylvania show that people who listen to diverse perspectives have a 25% higher likelihood of reducing stereotypical thinking and biases toward others, which helps bridge divides in polarized communities.

A 2020 study published in The Journal of Experimental Social Psychology found that exposure to opposing viewpoints increased empathy and understanding by nearly 30%. Participants who engaged with diverse perspectives were more likely to recognize the complexity of others' beliefs and had a greater capacity for empathy.

According to research from Northwestern University, groups that incorporate diverse viewpoints are 58% more effective at solving complex problems. Intellectual humility allows individuals to challenge assumptions and find more innovative solutions.

Research published by the American Psychological Association shows that people who practice intellectual humility report higher levels of life satisfaction and well-being. The ability to adapt one's thinking to new information without feeling defensive contributes positively to mental health.

A Pew Research Center study revealed that individuals who value and listen to differing opinions are 32% more likely to participate in community initiatives. Intellectual humility not only enriches personal lives but also fosters active and inclusive communities.

A study from Duke University found that individuals who practiced intellectual humility and engaged in open-minded dialogue experienced a 40% reduction in aggressive communication. This approach made participants more willing to discuss sensitive topics without escalating tensions.

Research from the University of California, Davis, found that people who exhibit intellectual humility—acknowledging they don’t have all the answers—are more likely to engage in discussions with people who hold different beliefs. This willingness promotes critical thinking and reduces conflict.

The Breaking Bread Village creates spaces where people can explore diverse viewpoints, reduce biases, and build empathy. Intellectual humility doesn’t just enrich individual perspectives; it strengthens communities and helps bridge divides across different backgrounds and beliefs.

WHY

Communities were asking for visible projects and programs that provide safe spaces to share ideas, thoughts, and perspectives. They wanted spaces where all people could gain an understanding of others and connect differences in an amicable way.

We listened and formed this series to collectively build, share, and connect with each other. we want to hear from the community, and that includes YOU because WE ARE in this together.

If you want to see change and build connectivity in your villages and communities, you need to first- have a seat at the table and have a conversation.

COMMITMENT

We committed to creating an opportunity to leave changed and see growth within yourself. You were offered the chance to grow your emotional intelligence and understand intellectual humility. You had the opportunity to build your community and expand your village after the Who We Are live show experience!

We are committed to providing the space, resources, viewpoints, and energy to collectively grow our community. we commit to valuing, hearing, respecting, welcoming, and celebrating differences.

HOPE

The Breaking Bread Village had these shows build on each other with the purpose and goal of having the panelists & audience members learn & grow -together- throughout the series.

The hope is that once you came to the first show you'll want to come to the others because learning is an ever-evolving process and growth takes time and dedication.

The goal is not to have every participant leave agreeing with each other- on every point- but rather that we all leave learning from each other.

MISSION

Regardless of series, our mission remains the same.

We create brave spaces for people to share and listen to each other's perspectives in an organic and non-judgemental manner, engage and serve the community through education, service, construct intentional-diverse spaces, and connect the community through shared conversation and exposure to differing views.

Creating spaces, connections, and communities - one conversation at a time.

STOP 1: MIDLAND

We brought our panel of guest to Venue 63 and asked the question "What About the Children?" From that question, we discussed child abuse and child advocacy - how to love and care for our children. The subject isn’t always easy- however our guests helped the conversation flow with love, purpose, and sincerity.

For more information about this topic, we recommend these amazing organizations:

  • Foster Families Navigation and Resource Center
  • Shelterhouse Midland
  • Children's Grief Center

"Each [panel] member brought a unique perspective to the table and discussion, while engaging the audience. I want to acknowledge everyone for their active participation and willingness to share their thoughts openly. It was amazing to see such a range of viewpoints come together seamlessly at times. The fact that no one appeared too shy to talk added to a environment where every opinion was valued, making our conversations very insightful. The flow of conversation was smooth, engaging, and thought provoking."

"This truly was such a beautifully enriching experience. To be able to contribute to conservation even attempting to touch such an ambiguous topic was both terrifying and exhilarating. I was honored to be able to share the space that was offered to me with the people that accompanied, both on the panel, and in the audience. Not only was the venue captivating in every corner, the energy that filled it complimented it so well."

"It is a valuable program to discuss issues we are facing in communities and the world. The panelist could agree or disagree with a panelist's comment with respect. It was uncomfortable at times but was important to focus on the greater good. I like Erin for asking questions before the discussion opened up to the community...We shared our perspective to the audience and the audience had an opportunity to ask the panelists various questions."

"I really enjoyed the opportunity to be a panelist for The Breaking Bread Village's conversation about societal expectations. The conversation between panelists and the audience brought forward important topics that don't always get the spotlight. The program succeeded in bringing together community members from all walks of life in a welcoming environment."

"When I walked in, I thought I knew what religion was, but when I left, I had a completely transformed mindset. I really liked hearing from the speakers who held very different views of what "religion" meant to them. If I could describe my experiences in attending the two Breaking Bread Village sessions I've attended, I would say it's inclusive and dynamic. The energy- from the moment I walked in, to the moment I walked out- was welcoming."

"We all wore our vulnerability openly as we exposed our hearts to strangers, not knowing how they would react. I expected that I might be intimidated. The topic was deep and I knew if I wanted to be my authentic self, I would have to allow my voice to be heard. What was the most surprising and comforting was how truly at ease I was. Erin has such a natural ability to calm your fears and allow safety in expression."

"The design of the show having a broad topic (like Societal Expectations) allows for panelists to "unpack" a lot... I loved trying to look at the topic through the lens of other panelists. I feel as if this panel had a great synergy. The conversation flowed so organically. That said, it felt as if we (panelists, audience, hostess) could have talked all night."

"I thoroughly enjoyed my time on The Breaking Bread Village. I liked listening to others that have different views than my own. Like Erin says, it's important to "meet people where they're at" regarding their beliefs and views. Doing that can lead to positive and helpful conversations. Thanks Erin!"

"It was an honor and privilege to share in a TBBV panel discussion with such a diverse set of religious identities. I think it became clear very early that we have far more in common (than not) in our individual and collective searches for meaning. I really appreciate Erin's leadership in fostering space for sharing contrasting views on such important issues. Thank you, Erin!"

"I wanted to say I had so much fun last night. I really enjoyed listening to all of the panelists. Everyone was so articulate, and passionate and I walked away learning something from each and every one of them."

"[Erin] does an amazing job at gathering many opinions and promoting healthy conversation. It felt good to share what I had to say and discuss topics I’m not used to talking about...  There are so many times in my life where my opinion or voice seems to be disregarded due to my young age. However, at this Breaking Bread Village event, I felt heard."

"With so much gratitude to Erin and the entire Breaking Bread Village for your energy, time, and talent to create spaces for courageous conversations, AND thank you to the audience for showing up. Being willing to take the risk, be vulnerable, and most of all - be present with those who may have different views than you - THIS is how we build an authentic and inclusive community."

We hope by modeling active listening, being open, and the art of giving and receiving- whoever witnesses it may try it too in their everyday lives and within themselves. And every once in a while, we sprinkle in a little food to feed the body while we also feed our souls.
